New, simpler method of oil and gas wastewater treatment creates energy too

Engineers from the University of Colorado Boulder and New Mexico State University have found a way to treat wastewater from the oil and gas industry that is simpler, cheaper, and creates energy in the process. Their method, called microbial capacitive desalination, relies on a microbe-powered battery. The microbes attract the hydrocarbons in the contaminants of the wastewater, releasing energy. That forms positive charges on one side of the cell and negative charges on the other, essentially creating a battery. The positive and negative ions of the salt components in the wastewater are then harnessed by the battery, creating energy.

New EcoVerde bacteria-based filter removes odor from wastewater

U.S.-based company EcoVerde created a new filtering system that uses bacteria to get rid of odors and other undesirables in wastewater, according to a release from Investigación y Desarrollo. The process funnels air from over the sewage water and sends to the “bioscrubber EG” system. The air is then removed and the odor-causing organisms are sent to the filter where waiting bacteria destroy them. The filtration system employs a combination of autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria to remove a variety of pollutants using oxidation. The system can handle highly polluted sewage as this means more food for the bacteria without raising costs. EcoVerde has extended its technology to Mexico to assist districts near sewage plants.

Algae Systems plans to make diesel, clean municipal wastewater with algae

Nevada-based Algae Systems seeks to develop diesel fuel using algae, according to the New York Times. The company, which launched a new factory in Mobile Bay, Alabama, speculates that the process to create the fuel will eliminate more carbon than it will create when the fuel burns. Their methods also clean municipal sewage and create carbon-rich fertilizer. The process includes heating the algae and municipal sewage to over 550 degrees Fahrenheit at high pressure, producing a liquid similar to crude oil.
